Iran–China rail link strengthens trade and reshapes regional connectivity
A new transcontinental rail route between China and Iran has officially commenced operations. The inaugural freight train from Xi’an, a major hub in eastern China, recently arrived at Iran’s Aprin Dry Port near Tehran, signifying the operational launch of a commercial land corridor linking East Asia to the Middle East. This is reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
The development is part of a wider East–West transport strategy that integrates Iran into the evolving Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). By offering an overland alternative to maritime routes, this rail connection positions Iran as a pivotal logistics hub in the emerging multipolar trade landscape, the source claims.
Reducing transit time from 30 to just 15 days, the new corridor bypasses strategic chokepoints. The land route allows more secure movement of goods, including industrial and renewable energy cargo.
Beyond logistics, the rail line is a product of deepening cooperation between Iran and China. It builds on the comprehensive 25-year economic partnership agreement signed in 2021, which outlines collaboration across infrastructure, energy, and trade sectors.
