Iran expands tourism infrastructure in the Lut Desert
Iranian authorities are taking significant steps to improve tourism infrastructure in the Lut Desert, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Major improvements have been made to visitor facilities in the Fahraj region.
At a recent event, Reza Bordbar, the deputy director of investment at Kerman province’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department, said the initiative aims to modernise the main facilities to improve the safety and comfort of visitors. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
There are plans to expand the range of available amenities, including tourist navigation, emergency services and security measures. Bordbar emphasised that as part of the ongoing improvements, a dedicated base for the World Heritage Site will be completed, including the erection of perimeter walls and fencing, as well as the installation of the necessary mechanical and electrical systems.
The Lut Desert is known for its extreme climatic conditions, where the highest temperatures on the earth's surface are often recorded, including a record 70.7°C. Its unique topography, filled with sickle-shaped dunes and nebhas, which can be up to 12 metres high, along with its reputation as a lifeless landscape, attracts explorers and tourists alike.
Despite the harsh conditions, the region is home to resilient plant and insect species that have adapted to the challenging conditions.
