Malaysia hopes to work closely with Egypt and other BRICS members towards its membership in group

Following Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Egypt, the two countries announced a plan to upgrade their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. The visit took place at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Anwar expressed hope to work closely with Egypt and other BRICS members towards its full membership in BRICS and to advance the Global South Agenda.

Discussing economic potential, both sides expressed confidence in further growth in trade and investment. The two sides noted the importance of cooperation in the digital economy, agricultural commodities, renewable energy, and the manufacturing and semiconductor industries. This is reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

The two sides also emphasised the importance of cooperation in higher education, noting Egypt's offer to provide more scholarships for Malaysian students.

The officials also agreed on the importance of free trade agreements with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

In a joint statement, the two countries summarised the visit, which coincided with the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. As part of further strengthening political ties, the two sides agreed that Malaysia will host the second meeting of the Egypt-Malaysia Joint Commission.
