South Africa's Department of Health plans to use AI to diagnose tuberculosis in miners

The South African Department of Health is considering introducing artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools to screen and diagnose tuberculosis and silicosis. This is in line with a recommendation by the World Health Organisation (WHO), according to the country's government. This is reported by the official website of the South African government. 

On 20-22 June, the department is holding an expert conference on therapies for these diseases using advanced technology and improving current techniques, especially for treating people suffering from occupational diseases.

Participants in the event include occupational health experts, representatives from mining companies, academic groups specialising in tuberculosis and silicosis research, representatives of miners' and former miners' unions, regulators and technology companies.

Radiography remains an important tool for screening and evaluation of chest organ diseases. Modern radiological techniques are an integral part of the diagnosis and prevention of tuberculosis and silicosis among mine workers.
