South Africa’s food and beverage industry grows 4.5% year-on-year in May 2025
South Africa’s food and beverage industry recorded a 4.5 per cent increase in real income in May 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, according to data released by Statistics South Africa.
Quick-service and takeaway establishments were the main drivers of this growth, registering a 6.6 per cent increase in income and contributing 2.7 per cent to the sector’s overall expansion, the agency reported.
In the three-month period from March to May 2025, the industry posted a positive growth rate of 4.3 per cent year-on-year. Fast food outlets continued to lead the gains across the sector.
This upward trend in food and beverage income contrasts with broader manufacturing output, which saw an annual increase of 0.5 per cent in May following six consecutive months of contraction. Notable improvements were recorded in specific sectors such as iron, steel, glass, and textiles.
Growth in the beverage segment has been boosted by shifting consumer preferences, particularly a rise in demand for takeaway drinks, organic and functional beverages, low-alcohol options, and premium or craft alcoholic products, as reported by Statistics South Africa.
According to the source, the figures indicate the resilience and adaptability of South Africa’s food and beverage sector and point to opportunities for further strengthening production and diversifying product offerings in line with evolving market trends.
