Brazil and UNESCO announce public tender to promote sustainable tourism ventures
The initiative aims to attract investment and encourage entrepreneurship in the tourism sector
The Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with UNESCO, announced the launch of a public tender to hire a specialised consultancy for the development of a technical manual focused on structuring tourism real estate projects through the lens of sustainable development. This was reported by the official website of the Brazilian Government.
At the launch event in Brasilia, the Minister of Tourism Celso Sabino stressed that the initiative aims to attract investment, encourage entrepreneurship in the tourism sector, and provide practical guidance to both public and private sector managers on designing projects aligned with responsible best practices.
Sabino emphasised that the resulting manual would enhance the recently launched Brazil Tourism Investment Guide, which showcases projects eligible for private investment. Released in January in collaboration with UN Tourism and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the guide already features numerous projects and aims to improve transparency and investor confidence. The new manual will offer more detailed technical guidance to support both existing and future initiatives.
Currently, the Ministry of Tourism’s online investment portal lists 69 registered projects, which together have the potential to generate over 680,000 jobs and attract around US$5.8 billion in investments. According to Sabino, attracting tourism investment relies not only on financial incentives but also on strong infrastructure, planning, professional training, and environmental preservation—areas the new manual will directly support.
The manual will include guidance on new projects, property conversions, expansion plans, and retrofit projects, revamping historic buildings while preserving their cultural value.
