Brazil launches record expansion of public sports infrastructure

More than 2,000 facilities are under construction nationwide, with the new programme set to reach 1,000 cities by 2027

Brazil is experiencing one of the most extensive waves of public sports infrastructure expansion ever recorded, with projects under way across all regions of the country. According to Minister of Sport Andre Fufuca, more than 2,000 facilities – including stadiums, gyms, courts, pitches and arenas – are currently being built throughout the 26 states and the Federal District.

Andre Fufuca emphasised the social dimension of the initiative. He said the new sites are designed to strengthen sport as a tool for inclusion and to improve quality of life for communities, according to Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.

“The Ministry of Sport is currently implementing the largest sports infrastructure network in history. To put this into perspective, we are talking about more than 2,000 projects. This is the largest number of municipalities in history to benefit from sports infrastructure,” noted Andre Fufuca, the Minister of Sport.

As the minister stated, the renewed federal presence in the sector since 2023 has made it possible to implement projects in every state and across all five regions, expanding access to groups that previously had limited opportunities to benefit from such infrastructure.

Among the flagship initiatives are the Arenas Brasil, part of the Social and Inclusive Infrastructure component of the New Growth Acceleration Programme (PAC). The plan envisages coverage of 500 municipalities in 2026 and expansion to 1,000 cities by the end of 2027. In 2025, 260 municipalities were approved for the project, with investments at this stage estimated at around US$70 million.

The standard model, prioritising areas of greater social vulnerability, includes a synthetic turf football pitch, a 3x3 basketball court, walking tracks, a children’s playground and LED lighting. Twelve arenas have already been handed over to local residents, while another 30 are in operation. Andre Fufuca highlighted that the spaces are intended to revitalise previously underused land, turning them into centres for sport, leisure and community life.
