Chile implements AI-driven aquaponics project with 95% water efficiency

The initiative combines hydroponic vegetable production and trout farming in a closed-loop system

Chile is implementing an innovative agricultural project that integrates hydroponic vegetable cultivation with trout farming through the use of artificial intelligence, achieving up to 95 per cent water-use efficiency. This is reported by El Maipo, a partner of TV BRICS. 

The Foundation for Agrarian Innovation (FIA) has developed the project in the Valparaiso region. An intelligent aquaponics system has been launched in the commune of Limache, where crop production and aquaculture operate within a single closed cycle.

The technology relies on continuous water recirculation. Water used for irrigating vegetables flows into trout tanks and is then naturally filtered before returning to the crops. Organic waste from the fish serves as a natural fertiliser, while water losses are limited to around 5 per cent, mainly due to plant transpiration.

Currently, the system is managed in real time through manual monitoring of key parameters, including ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH levels. Experts note that trout are particularly sensitive to environmental changes, making precise control essential for stable operation.

According to FIA, the project demonstrates the potential of intelligent aquaponics as a sustainable solution for the agri-food sector. The system is seen as a viable option for small and medium-sized family farms, enabling the production of vegetables and animal protein with minimal water consumption, especially in arid regions.
