China launches first large-scale production of high-performance carbon fibre

New project boosts advanced materials manufacturing for aerospace, transport, and high-tech industries

China has launched a major project to produce high-performance carbon fibre, marking the country’s first large-scale industrial production of T1000-grade carbon fibre. The initiative represents a step forward in strengthening China’s capabilities in advanced materials and high-tech manufacturing, according to China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.

Carbon fibre is a high-performance material composed of more than 90 per cent carbon. It combines low weight with exceptional strength, resistance to corrosion, and tolerance to high temperatures, while remaining flexible and easy to process. These properties make it a key material for sectors such as aerospace, electric vehicles, advanced equipment manufacturing, sports goods, and medical technology.

The T1000-grade carbon fibre produced under the new project features filaments with a diameter of just 5–6 micrometres, less than one-tenth the width of a human hair. At the same time, it achieves tensile strength exceeding 6,600 megapascals (MPa). With a density only about one quarter that of steel, the material is more than five times stronger. For example, a one-metre bundle of carbon fibre weighs around 0.5 grams but can withstand a load of over 200 kilograms.

At an industrial scale, the material can be used to manufacture heat-resistant shells for rockets and spacecraft, lightweight yet durable aircraft fuselages, and reinforced driver cabins for high-performance sports cars. In consumer applications, it is used in carbon plates for marathon running shoes, lightweight fishing rods, and ultra-light road bicycles that can be easily carried by hand.

China began developing aerospace-grade carbon fibre, including T300-grade materials, in 2005, alongside the construction of dedicated production lines. The "T" designation refers to tensile strength. Experts note that the current project relies on proprietary technologies, allowing the average tensile strength of the product to exceed 6,600 MPa and deliver improved performance characteristics. This achievement has positioned China among the world’s leading producers of high-strength carbon fibre in terms of technological capability.

By the end of 2025, the new production line had successfully completed continuous operation testing. During its initial phase, the facility reached an annual production capacity of around 200 tonnes, laying the groundwork for further expansion and broader application of carbon fibre in strategic industries.
