Chinese researchers develop system for non-invasive monitoring of sodium levels in blood
The device has been tested on laboratory mice and volunteers and has shown high measurement accuracy
A research team from Tianjin University has unveiled a new system that allows real-time, non-invasive monitoring of blood sodium levels. The technology can be used to monitor dehydration, kidney disease and neuroendocrine disorders. This is reported by China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.
It is noted that the technology is based on terahertz radiation, which is between microwaves and infrared light. It consumes little energy, causes almost no damage to tissue and responds well to changes at the molecular level. However, it was previously difficult to use in medicine because it is strongly absorbed by water and does not pass well through body tissue.
The researchers proposed a solution: a terahertz optoacoustic system that emits waves at frequencies that resonate with sodium ions but exclude signals from water. This allows selective excitation of sodium vibrations and their conversion into ultrasonic signals, which are then recorded by transducers.
This approach provides better penetration through tissues, including muscles and bones, and allows for accurate tracking of sodium levels. It is emphasised that the system can be adapted to analyse other ions, such as potassium and calcium, as well as biomolecules, including sugars, proteins, and enzymes. This expands its potential application in clinical practice.
