Dubai’s green hydrogen project sets benchmark for sustainable energy

This initiative leverages solar energy to produce hydrogen

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced the production of 90 tonnes of green hydrogen since the launch of its pioneering Green Hydrogen project.

This initiative, the first in the Middle East and North Africa, leverages solar energy to produce hydrogen. This is reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.

The project has generated over one gigawatt hour (GWh) of green energy, preventing approximately 450 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Using electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources, it produces 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, with storage capabilities for up to 12 hours. The hydrogen is then used to generate electricity through a hydrogen gas motor with a capacity of around 300 kilowatts.

By 2030, the solar park is expected to achieve a production capacity exceeding 5,000 MW, contributing to competitive pricing in green hydrogen production.

According to the source, the project supports the UAE's ambition to secure 25 per cent of the low-carbon hydrogen market. It aligns with key national strategies, including the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aim to ensure that all energy production comes from clean energy sources by 2050.

The project also serves as a platform for future hydrogen applications, including its use in air, land, and sea transport, and other industrial sectors, reinforcing Dubai's position as a global benchmark for renewable energy solutions.
