Egypt announces investment in modernising digital infrastructure of public universities

Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ayman Ashour, has announced a significant investment of 10 billion Egyptian pounds (US$196,7 million) to modernise the digital infrastructure of public universities. Key initiatives include the launch of a pilot programme to integrate generative AI at Ain Shams University. The programme aims to improve students' market-relevant skills by integrating AI tools into the curriculum, with the initiative to be expanded to other academic disciplines in universities across the country.

Minister Ashour emphasised the Ministry's commitment to using technology to transform the educational process, improve content delivery and increase student engagement. A key element of this efforts is the “Digital Transformation and Future Vision” initiative, which forms part of the Ministry's broader strategy for 2024. 

This strategy is aligned with the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research and is based on seven core principles: integration, interdisciplinary collaboration, connectivity, active participation, sustainable development, international benchmarking and fostering leadership and innovation.

Sherif Keshk, Assistant Minister for Smart Governance, outlined efforts to integrate advanced technology into academic and administrative functions. More than 800 teachers have been trained on advanced technologies, including cloud computing and data analysis, and 70 IT professionals from various universities have received in-depth training on cloud technologies. 

To prepare students for new job markets, especially in artificial intelligence and data analytics, the ministry has organised master classes with leading technology companies that aim to equip students with the necessary skills for a successful career. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, the Ministry’s Media Advisor and Official Spokesperson, affirmed that digital transformation remains at the core of the National Strategy for Higher Education and Research.
