Energy minister: Indonesia puts nuclear power at heart of development strategy
National Energy Council outlines strategy focused on sovereignty, resilience and self-sufficiency
Indonesia has identified nuclear energy development as one of the key priorities of its long-term national energy strategy, according to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.
The minister said the council has finalised the General Plan for National Energy, which will serve as the basis for future government policies. As reported by ANTARA, the plan places strong emphasis on the expansion of new and renewable energy sources, including nuclear power.
Lahadalia noted that detailed mechanisms for implementing the nuclear energy programme will be discussed during the council’s first plenary session. The outcomes of the meeting will be submitted to President Prabowo Subianto, who serves as the council’s chairperson.
According to the minister, Indonesia’s energy policy under President Prabowo is guided by four core principles: energy sovereignty, energy resilience, energy independence, and energy self-sufficiency.
As part of efforts to strengthen energy resilience, the National Energy Council plans to increase Indonesia’s energy reserves from the current level of approximately 21 days to up to three months. This objective is expected to be supported by the construction of additional energy storage infrastructure.
