Ethiopia opens first national forensic and toxicology centre to strengthen healthcare and justice systems

Ethiopia has taken a significant step towards advancing scientific, medical and judicial capabilities with the inauguration of the country's first integrated forensic and toxicology centre, a landmark facility expected to transform forensic investigations, genetic testing and specialised laboratory services nationwide.

The Addis Forensic and Toxicology Centre of Excellence brings together forensic science, toxicology and advanced DNA analysis under a single framework, creating a new hub for high-technology diagnostics and scientific research, reports Fana Media Corporation, a partner of TV BRICS.

Officials described the centre as a major milestone in Ethiopia’s efforts to modernise public services and strengthen national capacity in both healthcare and the justice sector. Equipped with approximately 80 advanced analytical and diagnostic systems, the facility is designed to support a broad range of scientific investigations and laboratory examinations.

The centre will provide comprehensive services including forensic analysis, toxicology testing, DNA profiling, identity verification, paternity assessments and family relationship investigations. Its capabilities are expected to improve the quality and speed of forensic evidence used in legal proceedings while supporting medical diagnostics and public health initiatives.

A key feature of the facility is the introduction of a DNA information storage and comparison system, enabling more efficient scientific analysis and strengthening the country's ability to conduct complex forensic investigations using internationally recognised methodologies.

Authorities noted that the new centre will significantly reduce the need to send biological samples abroad for specialised testing. This is expected to shorten processing times, improve accessibility to advanced laboratory services and strengthen Ethiopia’s scientific self-sufficiency.

The inauguration also reflects broader efforts to modernise Ethiopia’s healthcare infrastructure through investment in specialised medical services, advanced technologies and professional training. Experts believe the centre will contribute to the development of highly skilled specialists in forensic medicine, genetics, toxicology and laboratory sciences.
