Honey production to boost in Argentina
Honey production is growing in Argentina's San Juan province, driven by increased community involvement and sustainable practices. The focus is on beekeeping and utilising natural resources without harming the environment. Last year, honey yields were low due to poor hive maintenance, but with more communities joining the effort, production has significantly improved.
Gustavo Mercado, a representative from the Ministry of the Environment, mentioned that the first honey harvest in Bermejo, where the initiative began in October last year, yielded sixty kilogrammes. Reports indicate that the initiative aims to promote environmental conservation and raise awareness among local residents about the importance of preserving natural ecosystems.
Mercado explained that communities in forested areas are being trained to use non-timber resources and avoid activities that could harm the environment. In Bermejo, where carob trees are abundant, the initiative has already shown positive results, as reported by Ahora San Juan, a partner of TV BRICS, participants receive training, materials for hives, and then bees from the Ministry.
The initiative supports participants at every stage, including harvesting. They are provided with equipment, packaging, and labels that include information about the honey, which is produced under environmentally friendly practices. In Nikisanga, a record 120 kilogrammes of honey were harvested.
