India adopts AI technology to transform forest management and conservation

The Indian state of Uttarakhand has emerged as a pioneer in forest management by becoming the first state in India to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its strategies for sustainable forestry. 

This innovative approach aims to enhance biodiversity conservation, adapt to climate change, and optimise forest management practices, as reported by News9, a partner of TV BRICS.

The Uttarakhand Forest Department has introduced AI on a pilot basis in the Garhwal Forest Division, using advanced tools to analyse ecosystem data and develop a 10-year working plan. These plans are critical for managing the state's diverse forest ecosystems, which include tropical forests, temperate woodlands, and alpine meadows. 

AI enables a more accurate understanding of the region’s biodiversity, wildlife habitats, and watershed areas, leading to improved management recommendations tailored to each forest type.

Initial results from the pilot project show that AI delivers detailed insights into forest health, identifying priority species and recommending targeted conservation measures.

With approximately two-thirds of Uttarakhand’s landmass covered by forests, this AI-driven approach is poised to revolutionise forest management across the state.
