Indian chess player also won silver at the tournament, while the bronze went to a Chinese player
Divya Deshmukh became the first Indian woman to win gold at the Women's World Chess Cup. She defeated titled compatriot Koneru Humpy 2.5-1.5 in the final of the tournament on a tie-breaks. This is reported by ANI, a partner TV BRICS.
With the tournament win, Deshmukh officially became the 88th grandmaster from India and the fourth woman grandmaster in the country's history.
The chess player was congratulated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the Republic Droupadi Murmu.
"A historic final featuring two outstanding Indian chess players! Proud of the young Divya Deshmukh on becoming FIDE Women's World Chess Champion 2025. Congratulations to her for this remarkable feat," Modi wrote in a social media post.
Koneru Humpy won the silver medal of the tournament while the bronze went to Tan Zhongy of China.
