Iran discovers 100 ancient coins

The find testifies to the region's important trading past

More than 100 historical coins, believed to date back to the Islamic period (7th century AD), were discovered by Iranian archaeologists during excavations in the Kamar Zarin area of Isfahan province. This is reported by IRNA, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to Amir Karamzadeh, head of Isfahan's Department of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, a major trading hub may have been located at this site. Thirty-five coins were recovered during the last day of excavations alone.

"Based on the available evidence, we believe that this area was an important centre of trade in the past. We are confident that there may be even more valuable artefacts in the lower layers of the soil," Karamzadeh added.

All the coins found require thorough cleaning and laboratory testing to accurately determine their age and historical value. Due to the importance of the discovery, the Archaeological Research Institute has extended the permit to continue the work. This will allow scientists to conduct more extensive research and study the economic and cultural past of Isfahan in greater depth.

The excavations in Kamar Zarin were initiated two years ago when traces of two historical architectural structures were accidentally discovered during construction work. The Isfahan authorities have already decided that the area where the excavations are taking place will be converted into an open-air museum, where all important archaeological finds will be exhibited.
