Iran pioneers shale oil extraction technology to achieve energy independence

The new technology could significantly enhance the nation’s ability to tap into these unconventional resources

In a groundbreaking achievement, Iranian researchers have developed innovative technology to extract shale oil from reservoirs. This is reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

For the first time in Iran, the team successfully utilised toxic coke technology to extract shale oil at laboratory and semi-industrial scales.

Iran’s shale oil potential gained attention in 2017 when reserves of two billion barrels of light crude were discovered in Lorestan. The newly developed extraction technology could significantly enhance the nation’s ability to tap into these unconventional resources.

Shale oil is produced by breaking down organic matter in oil shale rock through pyrolysis, hydrogenation, or thermal dissolution. The synthetic oil generated can be refined to match conventional crude oil specifications, supporting applications across transportation and energy sectors.

This milestone underscores Iran’s commitment to advancing its energy sector and diversifying its oil production capabilities, the source claims.
