Kazakhstan develops new irrigation technology using drainage water

The innovative method has been patented and presented to farmers

The Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Water Economy has developed a technology for irrigating agricultural crops using drainage water. The innovation has been patented and presented to agrarians, as reported by Kazinform News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS, citing the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

This new technology is part of the institute’s ongoing research, which currently includes four projects in the field of water management. The findings have also been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, emphasised the critical role of science in advancing the sector.

"Every project implemented by our ministry must be backed by solid scientific evidence. We have high expectations for the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Water Economy. [...] Now we require concrete results that will enable more efficient use of our water resources," he stated.

Other ongoing projects led by the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Water Economy include: development of an automated hydraulic gate model applicable to low-discharge irrigation canals; creation of scientific and methodological foundations for water supply in the lower reaches of the Shu River; development of a technology to improve the condition of degraded irrigated areas. In Turkestan Region, the institute is testing a pipeless water lifting technology, which aims to reduce costs associated with the installation and operation of vertical drainage boreholes.
