Putin congratulates Xi Jinping on upcoming Spring Festival and reviews results of bilateral cooperation in 2025

The leaders of Russia and China discussed bilateral partnership during a videoconference

The comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction between Russia and China is exemplary in nature and meets the fundamental interests of the peoples of the two countries; in 2025 it continued to develop steadily. This was stated by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin during videoconference talks with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping.

Putin congratulated the Chinese leader on the upcoming Spring Festival. The celebration of the Chinese New Year, the Russian President noted, has already become a tradition in Russia as well. In the coming days, the festival will be celebrated in Moscow and other Russian cities. Meanwhile, residents and visitors to Beijing will be able to experience Russian winter farewell traditions at the Moscow Maslenitsa festival.

“I would like to personally congratulate you and, through you, the entire friendly Chinese people on the New Year 2026 and the upcoming Spring Festival, which will usher in the Year of the Red Fire Horse, as we understand it. This symbol embodies strength, energy and the desire to move forward – qualities that characterise the ties between our countries,” the Russian President said, as quoted on the Kremlin website.

Putin noted that trade turnover between Russia and China has exceeded the US$200 billion mark for the third consecutive year, while trade in agricultural products grew by more than 20 per cent in 2025. Russia remains among the leading suppliers of energy resources to the PRC.

Our partnership in the energy sector is mutually beneficial and truly strategic in nature. We are maintaining an active dialogue in the field of peaceful nuclear energy and advancing high-tech projects, including in industry and space exploration. […] The Cross Years of Education have begun. At present, more than 56,000 Chinese students are studying in Russia, while over 21,000 Russian students are studying in China. […] The introduction of a visa-free regime undoubtedly contributes to the growth of business and humanitarian contacts. I am grateful to you for this initiative, which we readily supported

For his part, Xi Jinping noted the successful holding of the Years of Culture of China and Russia, cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian sphere, and the promotion of cooperation in new areas.

China–Russia relations are entering a new stage of development. It is important to seize this historic opportunity, continuously deepen strategic interaction, and jointly bear the responsibility of major powers in order to ensure the steady development of China–Russia relations along the right trajectory
