Saudi Arabia unveils 20 ancient rock art sites in Soudah Peaks
Newly discovered inscriptions and carvings dating back 4,000–5,000 years highlight the region’s rich cultural and civilisational history
The Heritage Commission has identified 20 historic rock art sites in the Soudah Peaks area. Covering more than 636.5 square kilometres in Soudah and parts of Rijal Almaa, highlighting the region as a significant repository of ancient culture. This is reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The sites contain a variety of engravings, including depictions of wildlife such as ibex, ostriches, and hyenas, as well as representations of human activities, palm trees, and ancient weapons. Experts estimate the carvings and inscriptions date back 4,000 to 5,000 years.
The survey was conducted in four scientific phases, beginning with data collection, site analysis, and the classification of high-value archaeological locations, ensuring that the findings are preserved and documented for future research and development.
The experts emphasised the protection of these discoveries is central to the broader mission. The findings will be integrated into future cultural and tourism initiatives aimed at presenting the historical and natural richness of Soudah Peaks in an authentic way.
According to the source, the initiative not only safeguards archaeological treasures but also promotes educational and cultural engagement for visitors, strengthening Saudi Arabia’s role in conserving the region’s ancient legacy.
