South African hauliers will switch to electric and gas-powered trucks
They will be used mainly for urban routes, intra-city and regional deliveries
The year 2024 is expected to be the start of a new era for trucking in South Africa with switching from internal combustion engines fuelled by diesel to electric and gas engines.
South Africa is lagging behind other markets of electric commercial vehicles. China, for example, sold 36,000 electric trucks in 2022.
However, some foreign firms have already started to sell electric vehicles in the local market.
Besides, gas-powered vehicles and fuel cell trucks will appear on South African roads.
A fuel cell truck is an electric truck that generates electricity from fuel cells that run on hydrogen stored in the truck's tanks.
In a fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen are combined through an electrochemical reaction to form electricity, heat and water.
Global manufacturers of these vehicles are constantly striving to introduce innovative safety features, whereas in the past many of them were just optional. For example, now lane control and collision avoidance are becoming standard in new models being produced. This is reported by BusinessTech.
