Vietnam's capital city to switch to green buses by 2035

From 2026, the city will prepare full technical and economic parameters for all types of electric buses

Hanoi authorities have announced plans to convert half of the city's bus fleet to electric or liquefied natural gas (LNG/CNG) buses as current vehicles reach the end of their useful life. The city also intends to continue implementing other measures to green the bus fleet with the aim of achieving 100 per cent use of electric buses and green energy vehicles by 2035.

The proposal sets out a roadmap for the development and transition to green buses in Hanoi between 2026 and 2035, following a plan approved by the Prime Minister in 2022. This is reported by Vietnam News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Early next year, four transport companies, plan to invest in launching five pilot electric bus routes using 76 buses: 11 small and 65 medium-sized buses.

From 2026, the city will prepare full technical and economic parameters for all types of electric buses. Transport companies will start replacing obsolete (10 years old) buses depending on the needs of the routes and the availability of electric models on the market. About 1,813 buses are projected to be replaced between 2026 and 2030, with a replacement rate of 93.4 per cent by 2030.

Between 2031 and 2035, 238 vehicles are expected to be replaced and by 2035, 100 per cent of the bus fleet will consist of electric buses and green energy vehicles.

Companies operating public buses in Hanoi must work with the Department of Transport to develop specific plans to switch to electric and green buses in line with common goals and timelines.
