Argentina develops new approach to treating glioblastoma

Scientists from Argentina's National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) have proposed a new method for combating glioblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumour.

According to Ahora San Juan, a partner of TV BRICS, during laboratory and preclinical studies, specialists found that blocking the Foxp3 protein, which promotes tumour growth and spread, increases the sensitivity of glioblastoma to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. To do this, the researchers used the experimental peptide P60.

"When we blocked Foxp3 with P60, the response of glioblastoma cells to radiotherapy and various chemotherapeutic drugs improved significantly," said study leader Marianela Candolfi.

The scientists emphasise that the method has only been tested on cell and preclinical models so far. However, the results obtained allow Foxp3 to be considered a promising therapeutic target for the development of new glioblastoma treatment regimens.

Using advanced telemedicine technology, a surgeon in China remotely guided the procedure, while a local team supervised in Almaty. The robotic system enabled minimal invasiveness, precise tumour removal, and faster patient recovery, with plans for further robotic surgeries across multiple specialities in the coming months.
