The Second High-Level International Conference “Sustainable Development in Eurasia” will take place in Astana on 29 May. Participants will discuss the interim results and prospects of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), the structure of the new agenda after 2030, as well as the energy aspects of sustainable development.

The conference will feature senior officials, representatives of major businesses and experts involved in the sustainable development agenda, including from BRICS countries and their partners: Russia, India, China, South Africa, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand.

The programme includes a plenary session, several thematic sessions and a special session entitled “Energy for Sustainable Development”.

“The United Nations has announced the start of consultations on revising the 17 Sustainable Development Goals for the period after 2030, and coordination of efforts is necessary in order to develop solutions. MGIMO University is holding the Second High-Level Conference ‘Sustainable Development in Eurasia’ in Astana to unite efforts and discuss what universal approach to the SDGs can be developed – whether we retain them, whether we concentrate on certain priorities and pay greater attention to them, or whether we act regionally and then combine global efforts. These three main schools of thought will be discussed in Astana,” noted Igor Yurgens, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and ESG Transformation at MGIMO.

Among the conference participants are Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek, Rector of MGIMO University Anatoly Torkunov, Vice Minister of the National Development Planning of Indonesia, Febrian Alphyanto Ruddyard, and Director of the UN Environment Programme's One Planet Network, Jorge Laguna-Celisand others. The conference results will be summarised online by the President of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network and SDG Advocate for the United Nations Secretary General, Jeffrey Sachs.

The conference is organised by the Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia (MGIMO University), a partner of TV BRICS, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan, and L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University. The TV BRICS International Media Network is acting as the international media partner of the event.
