Brazil brings together global academic leaders to discuss future of higher education

The event highlighted the country as a benchmark in scientific innovation and international collaboration

From 30 September to 3 October, the Cais do Sertao Cultural Centre, in the Recife district of Pernambuco, hosted the XVIII General Assembly and the XV International Seminar of the Group for International Cooperation of Brazilian Universities (GCUB), a partner of TV BRICS. The events were held under the theme: "Democracy, Geopolitics, and International University Cooperation: Building Bridges for Peace and Global Sustainability."

In 2025, the General Assembly and International Seminar were organised in partnership with the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE).

The meeting energised the academic landscape, promoting new partnerships between Brazilian universities and international institutions. National and foreign experts presented research and discussed key topics on global university cooperation.

According to Rossana Valeria de Souza e Silva, Executive Director of GCUB and General Coordinator of the events, more than 250 participants from around 40 countries took part, including representatives of higher education institutions, diplomats, government authorities, and international organisations.

"It is a pleasure to provide an international space for debate, reflection and joint learning to promote quality higher education, which is so necessary to achieve a more peaceful and sustainable world," she said.

The Group for International Cooperation of Brazilian Universities (GCUB) is a non-profit civil society association founded in 2008, bringing together 103 Brazilian universities and 8 foreign institutions, focused on academic, scientific, and cultural activities.
