Schools are the most organised place to start and spread these life-saving skills within the community, experts say
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) held a consultative meeting where experts concluded that teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be made a mandatory part of the school curriculum in India. This is reported by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
A study conducted by AIIMS has shown that children between the ages of 6 and 12 are successful in learning CPR, while older students, due to their more developed muscle strength, are better at learning the practical skills. Experts suggest that CPR training should be integrated into physical education and included in the examination system.
They emphasise that timely CPR can halve mortality, so it is important to teach the population simple and effective first aid techniques.
Schools provide an ideal environment for teaching CPR, as children learn quickly and are enthusiastic about hands-on training.
The meeting agreed to develop a national plan to disseminate information on CPR and ensure that this important skill is included in school curricula across India.
