The discovery provides new opportunities for the development of ecologically sustainable tourism within the region
A new population of the critically endangered Nujiang snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus strykeri) has been discovered in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. This is reported by People's Daily Online, a partner of TV BRICS.
This discovery, made by a collaborative research team, reveals a third known population of these elusive primates within China, estimated to consist of 60-80 individuals. This brings the total known population of this species in China to approximately 360 monkeys spread across three distinct groups.
The research team deployed 57 infrared cameras and meticulously mapped 20 observation routes, gathering extensive data on the monkeys' activity and habitat.
Parallel observation of all three populations has confirmed that this represents a separate and unique group. The Nujiang snub-nosed monkey, considered a flagship species for the Gaoligong Mountains, plays a vital role in maintaining the delicate balance of the region's ecosystem, and their presence contributes to the protection of other species of flora and fauna.
The discovery of this new population underscores the success of ongoing conservation initiatives and provides new opportunities for the development of ecologically sustainable tourism within the region, the source claims.
