India’s data centre capacity set to double by 2027 amid digital transformation

India’s data centre industry is poised for unprecedented growth, with capacity expected to more than double to 2-2.3 GW by the fiscal year 2026-2027, as reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

The surge is driven by rapid digitalisation, increased adoption of cloud services, and soaring consumer demand for data, alongside the rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).

The source highlights that as enterprises transition to digital platforms and high-speed internet becomes more accessible, data consumption is set to skyrocket. Mobile data usage alone has grown at a compound annual growth rate of 25 per cent over the past five years, reaching 24 GB per month at the end of fiscal 2024. This figure is projected to rise to 33-35 GB per month by fiscal 2026.

The growth trajectory is further accelerated by the demands of GenAI, which requires higher computational power and lower latency than traditional cloud functions, creating a robust tailwind for data centre demand in India.
