Iran and UNESCO advance joint agenda on sustainable resource management
The partnership focuses on science, education and capacity building for water, soil, and biodiversity in dry regions
Iran and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are strengthening cooperation on the sustainable management of natural resources, with particular attention to water, soil, and biodiversity in arid and semi-arid areas. The initiative highlights a shared commitment to reinforcing scientific knowledge and institutional capabilities in environmentally sensitive regions.
As reported by Mehr News Agency, a TV BRICS partner, the framework for collaboration was discussed in Tehran during a meeting between Reza Aflatooni, the head of Iran’s watershed Management and Natural Resources Organisation, and the Secretary-General of the National UNESCO Commission in Iran. The talks centred on expanding structured engagement across educational, scientific, and technical fields linked to long-term resource stewardship.
Both sides underscored the importance of closer coordination between national bodies and UNESCO-affiliated international centres. Plans include specialised training programmes, the exchange of technical expertise and the launch of joint research projects, alongside the preparation of skilled professionals to support sustainable development priorities.
Education and capacity building were identified as key drivers in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, enhancing climate change adaptation and addressing desertification. Participants also highlighted the value of integrated watershed management approaches as part of broader environmental planning and resilience strategies.
Referring to UNESCO’s missions in water, climate, environment, and natural heritage, Reza Aflatooni stated that his organisation stands ready to develop international training courses, joint empowerment initiatives and regional scientific networks. The meeting concluded with an agreement to prepare a memorandum of understanding and a joint action plan to formalise educational and research cooperation.
