Iran develops groundbreaking methods to treat three types of cancer

Iran is advancing clinical research into innovative treatments for three major cancers – ovarian, prostate and bladder – using genetically modified or weakened viruses. 

The novel therapies, designed to target and destroy tumour cells while sparing healthy tissue, form part of the country’s broader ambition to become one of the world’s top five nations in regenerative medicine. The developments were reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

A key technique under trial involves combining therapeutic viruses with mesenchymal stem cells. These stem cells serve as delivery vehicles, guiding the virus directly to the tumour site while simultaneously supporting the repair of damaged tissues. The dual-action approach not only enhances the effectiveness of cancer treatment but also reduces potential side effects, making it a particularly promising strategy in tackling aggressive malignancies.

All clinical trials are being conducted under the oversight of Iran’s national drug regulatory authority and are expected to run for two to three years before possible approval for medical use.

Alongside cancer research, Iran is expanding its use of cell-based therapies to address other complex diseases, including vitiligo and Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD); a serious condition that can arise after bone marrow transplants. One such cell therapy drug has already received regulatory approval for commercial distribution within the country.

As part of its current programme, Iran aims to bring at least 15 new regenerative drugs to market and secure a leading position on the global stage in this cutting-edge field of medicine.
