Russia proposes construction of nuclear power plant and aluminium plant in Indonesia
Authorities of West Kalimantan Province are considering potential cooperation with Russian companies

Russia’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergey Tolchenov, has proposed cooperation with the Government of West Kalimantan Province in the construction of a nuclear power plant, the development of an aluminium plant, and the expansion of educational programmes. The proposal was made during a meeting with Governor Ria Norsan as part of the diplomat’s first official visit to the province, ANTARA reports.
“Our purpose in visiting West Kalimantan is to introduce the nuclear power plant construction technology we possess while exploring potential cooperation,” the Russian diplomat stated.
The Governor noted that the authorities have already identified a site for construction. “For the nuclear power plant development, we have prepared a location on Semesak Island in Bengkayang District. We are indeed looking for investors. If Russia is willing to become an investor, we would certainly welcome it,” Ria Norsan said.
The Russian delegation included investors from the bauxite mining, aluminium processing, and nuclear energy sectors. Representatives of the Russian side expressed their readiness to build an aluminium processing plant in the province, noting that significant bauxite reserves in the region create opportunities for industrial development.
Anna Belokoneva, a representative of Russia’s nuclear industry, also visited West Kalimantan. She stated that her company possesses reactor technologies with capacities ranging from 100 to 1,200 megawatts per power unit and guarantees their safety.
In addition to energy and industry, Russia proposed cooperation in education. Tolchenov noted that the Russian Government annually provides hundreds of scholarships to Indonesian students in technological and socio-cultural fields.
