Russian and South African leaders discuss BRICS co-operation

Vladimir Putin and Cyril Ramaphosa held talks by telephone

Russian President Vladimir Putin and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during a telephone conversation discussed co-operation between the two countries in the BRICS line. This is reported by the official website of the President of the Russian Federation.

"In the context of the BRICS chairmanship passed from South Africa to Russia, the subject of interaction within the framework of the Association in the new expanded composition was touched upon," the message reads.

The parties expressed satisfaction with the achieved level of strategic partnership of the two countries and discussed issues of practical interaction in trade, economic, energy and humanitarian spheres.

The South African President expressed deep condolences and feelings of solidarity in connection with the recent terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall, wished fortitude to the families and friends of the victims and a speedy recovery to the injured.

In June 2023, the leaders held an informal meeting in St. Petersburg when the Russian president visited the city to address the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Vladimir Putin spoke to African counterparts, including Cyril Ramaphosa, about the Russian economy.

South Africa joined BRICS in 2011, two years after the association was created. The South African side has made a significant contribution to the work of the alliance for more than 10 years.
