Saudi Arabian scientists discover traces of human life in lava tube

It highlights the importance of archaeological research in understanding the lives of ancient societies

Traces of human life have been discovered in the lava tube of Umm Jirsan during an archaeological study in Saudi Arabia. This is reported by PLOS ONE.

The site is located in the volcanic field of Harrat Khaybar, 125 kilometres north of Medina, and is recognised as a human habitation site from around 7,000 years ago.

The study of artefacts has uncovered fabric fragments, wooden objects, rock carvings of animals and human remains. These finds indicate a diversity of life in the lava tube, including herding, hunting, and possibly grazing.

Lava tubes, including Umm Jirsan, were not only habitats but also refuges from the environment and predators. These structures have been important to society for centuries and still provide protection and access to water resources for modern communities today.

The researchers noted the high quality of the study and its similarity to material from other regions, such as Jordan.
