Senate approves the Lula government's initiative to restart work in the education and health sectors

The bill prioritises work in rural areas, in indigenous communities

The plenary session of the Brazilian Federal Senate approved Bill 4.172/2023, an executive initiative whose main objective is the resumption of work in basic education, training and health.

The bill guarantees the allocation of funds from the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE) and the Unified Health System (SUS) for projects recognised as a priority by states and municipalities. Once approved, the document is sent to the president for approval, as reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.

The proposal is a National Pact for the Renewal of Engineering Works and Services, which aims to breathe new life into projects that have already received funding from the FNDE and SUS, but for some reason have been frozen or unfinished. In order to ensure efficiency, the revised work should be completed within two years, with the possibility of a one-time extension. Such renegotiation provides for a new commitment period and, if necessary, adjustments to the original project.

The criteria for the resumption of this work will be determined at a later date by the Executive Committee, taking into account the progress made to date and the year in which it was initiated. The project prioritises work in rural areas, indigenous communities and municipalities that have been affected by natural disasters in the last decade.
