UAE Ambassador to Russia discusses development of bilateral relations
According to him, cooperation is gathering increasing momentum over time
The visit of the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to Russia marked an important stage in strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries. This event reflects the UAE's aspiration to develop international cooperation and support global stability. This was outlined in an article by the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Russian Federation, Mohammed Ahmed Al Jaber.
He recalled that diplomatic relations between the UAE and Russia were established in 1971. Official visits by leaders played a significant role in the development of cooperation.
"In 2018, a declaration of strategic partnership was signed between the two countries, defining the framework for cooperation in various fields. In 2024, His Highness’s visit to Russia to participate in the BRICS summit in Kazan confirmed the UAE’s commitment to strengthening its role in international forums," the Ambassador noted.
He emphasised that mutual economic cooperation is constantly developing. In 2024, trade turnover reached approximately US$11.5 billion. The tourism industry is also progressing: the number of travellers from both sides is increasing, reflecting strong historical ties between the peoples.
Special attention is paid to the cultural sphere – Days of Culture and other events are held, which help to bring the two nations closer together. In terms of education, the number of Emirati students in Russian universities is increasing, and universities in both countries are conducting joint research programmes.
The UAE and Russia are also developing partnerships in the space sector, implementing joint scientific missions and training astronauts.
Furthermore, a comprehensive economic partnership agreement between the UAE and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is helping to actively expand domestic trade. In 2024, the volume of bilateral non-oil trade between the UAE and the EAEU increased by 27 per cent, amounting to US$29 billion.
Recent talks between Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed the strong political and economic cooperation between the countries. The leaders noted the growth of mutual investments, active engagement in education and culture, as well as active participation in international platforms – at the UN, BRICS, and EAEU.
