UAE modernises waste treatment facility to boost recycling capacity
Once upgraded, it will be able to process up to 400,000 tonnes of solid household waste annually
In Al Ain, one of the largest cities in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, preparations have begun for a large-scale modernisation of the household waste recycling plant. This was reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.
The plant will be equipped with state-of-the-art mechanical sorting systems and technologies for extracting recyclable materials from mixed household waste. The new equipment will enable more efficient separation of plastic, paper, cardboard, metals and other materials suitable for reuse. The preparatory phase is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, with the upgraded facility set to become fully operational in early 2027.
The upgraded plant will serve the city of Al Ain – the second most populous city in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi – by processing a significant proportion of the municipal waste generated in the city each year. Once the plant is operational, it is planned that around 60 per cent of the city’s waste will be sent for recycling rather than to landfill.
The project will be one of the steps towards achieving Abu Dhabi’s goal of reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill by 80 per cent by 2031.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the modernisation will create new jobs during the construction and operation of the facility and will also contribute to the development of specialists in the field of modern waste recycling technologies.
