Argentina opens first highway fully powered by solar lighting

Argentina’s San Juan province has inaugurated the country’s first highway fully illuminated by solar energy. The road is equipped with a large-scale photovoltaic system that supplies all lighting along the corridor, making it the first national highway in Argentina to operate entirely on renewable power for public lighting, according to Diario La R, a partner of TV BRICS. 

As part of the project, the conventional electricity supply was replaced with an autonomous solar-powered system capable of supporting all lighting infrastructure. This transition has reduced energy consumption, lowered greenhouse gas emissions and cut operating costs associated with street lighting. The system includes solar panels, battery storage units and smart control equipment that stores energy during the day and ensures continuous illumination at night, even during adverse weather conditions.

Provincial authorities stressed that the solar highway represents not only an environmental initiative but also a contribution to local economic development. The project has created jobs, supported the clean energy sector and strengthened San Juan’s position as a hub for energy innovation in Argentina.

San Juan benefits from one of the highest levels of solar radiation in the country, and the highway is part of a broader energy policy that includes solar parks and public–private partnerships.

According to the source, the photovoltaic lighting system has enhanced night-time visibility and improved road safety along one of the province’s main transport corridors, supporting private drivers, cargo traffic and tourism activities.
