Ethiopia exceeds target for preparing seedlings for 2025 Green Legacy campaign
The Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture has announced that 8.4 billion seedlings have been prepared across the country for the annual Green Legacy environmental campaign for 2025, 900 million more than originally planned.
In an interview with Fana Media Corporation, a partner of TV BRICS, Shanko Tessa, Head of the Watershed Development Desk at the Ministry, noted that the initial target was 7.5 billion seedlings. However, thanks to active preparation, it was possible to significantly exceed expectations.
The campaign covers 1.9 million hectares of land, of which 1.5 million hectares have already been recognised as suitable for planting. Detailed tree placement maps have been developed for 492,000 hectares.
To date, over 518.9 million seedlings have been planted and 3.1 billion planting holes have been prepared. Work continues ahead of the main planting season.
The environmental initiative is being implemented in more than 116,000 locations across the country, including government agencies, private companies, religious organisations, schools, and farms.
To ensure the effectiveness of the campaign, a national coordination committee has been set up, which assesses the progress of the work on a weekly basis with the participation of representatives from various sectors.
