Exports of Ethiopia’s industrial products grow by 40 per cent over past eight months

The increase follows a national initiative aimed at strengthening domestic production

The "Made in Ethiopia" Movement has increased production capacity and the competitiveness of local industrial enterprises, said Tarekegn Bululta. His remarks were reported by Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), a partner of TV BRICS.

The report notes that the initiative plays a key role in strengthening Ethiopia’s industrial base, promoting a culture of consuming locally produced goods and enhancing the country’s economic self-reliance.

The programme is implemented by the Ministry of Industry of Ethiopia and provides support to local manufacturers through policy incentives, technical assistance and expanded market access.

Priority sectors include the textile, garment, leather, pharmaceutical and chemical industries and agro-processing, as well as the production of construction materials.

The minister reported that exports of industrial products have increased by 40 per cent over the past eight months.

The capacity utilisation rate has also risen significantly – from 46 to 66.3 per cent. This progress has enabled the industrial sector to save significant amounts of foreign currency by replacing imported goods with locally produced alternatives, while also creating new jobs.

To promote the initiative, the authorities have launched a website for the Made in Ethiopia Movement, which will disseminate information and promote Ethiopian goods in both domestic and international markets. An exhibition entitled “Made in Ethiopia for Comprehensive Sovereignty” will take place from 2 to 8 May this year at the Addis Ababa International Convention Centre. More than 270 local and international manufacturers are expected to participate.

In support of the event, a 10-kilometre run will be organised jointly with the Ethiopian Athletics Federation. The race is expected to attract more than 17,000 participants, including around 800 professional athletes.
