India exceeds coal production and shipment targets
In the current financial year, the Indian Ministry of Coal has reported an increase in coal production and shipment from domestic and commercial mines. This indicates growth and improved efficiency in the coal sector.
According to the ministry, significant performance has been achieved between April 2023 and February 2024, with production of 126.80 million metric tonnes and dispatch of 128.88 mt. This represents an increase of 27.06 per cent and 29.14 per cent respectively over the previous financial year. This is reported by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
At present, there are 54 producing mines in the coal sector, including 35 for the power sector, 11 for the unregulated sector and 8 for the sale of coal.
In February 2024, coal production and shipment rates jumped to 14.85 million and 12.95 million tonnes respectively, up 37% and 33% year-on-year.
Average daily production and shipment were 5.12 million and 4.46 mt per day respectively, indicating stable productivity.
The ministry attributes this success to strategic policy reforms. Going forward, the plan is to maintain the growth trajectory and strengthen infrastructure to meet the country's growing energy needs.
The surge in coal production is an important step towards achieving India's energy goals and strengthening its position as a self-sufficient energy power on the global stage.
