Iranian researcher develops IoT system to monitor building safety

An Iranian researcher has developed an innovative method for applying Internet of Things (IoT) technology to structural health monitoring systems, offering a more effective way to assess the condition of buildings and infrastructure both in normal circumstances and after earthquakes. This is reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

The postdoctoral project, supported by the Iran National Science Foundation, was led by Hosseini Tehrani. He noted that his project tackles key challenges such as high sensor costs and data transmission limits by enabling direct communication between sensors and a central hub, while using IoT technology, combined with low-power, long-range communication methods to reduce energy consumption in battery-operated devices.

A key feature of the system is its ability to process data locally within each sensor before transmission, significantly cutting the volume of information sent and improving network performance. 

According to the researcher, a prototype has already been developed, paving the way for installation in critical structures across the country. The system allows continuous, real-time monitoring throughout a structure’s lifespan, rapid post-earthquake assessments, and the option of temporary or periodic deployment across different types of equipment.
