Over 63.9 million rural Indians achieve digital literacy

The government has also launched initiatives to generate IT jobs in smaller towns

India has surpassed its digital literacy target, with 63.9 million individuals in rural areas completing training under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA), the government scheme. The initiative, aimed at empowering at least one person per rural household, officially concluded on 31 March 2024, surpassing the original target of 60 million.

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, shared these statistics, highlighting the extensive reach of IT training centres established nationwide, including in Haryana's Bhiwani and Mahendergarh districts.

Additionally, the government has launched initiatives such as the India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS) and the North East BPO Promotion Scheme (NEBPS) to generate IT jobs in smaller towns. These programmes provide financial incentives, prioritising local entrepreneurs, women, and differently-abled individuals.

Recognising India as a global leader in IT skills, the government is now focusing on advanced technology training, as reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

This comprehensive effort is a part of the nation’s commitment to equipping its workforce for the demands of a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
