Representatives of Russia and China discuss conservation of Amur tigers and leopards

The first meeting of the joint committee of the China-Russia transboundary nature reserve “Land of the Big Cats” took place in Hunchun, China. The parties held a substantive exchange of views on wildlife protection, the restoration of habitats for rare species, and the improvement of environmental oversight mechanisms in border areas. The news was reported by the portal Northeast Asia Today, a partner of TV BRICS.

This nature reserve was established on the Russia–China border to protect Amur tigers and leopards.

During the meeting, the Chinese side shared updates on the implementation of the national plan for recovering the tiger population, the enhancement of relevant legislation, and the use of modern technologies – such as artificial intelligence – for monitoring wildlife in national parks. The Russian side presented its efforts to combat poaching and support the growth of the Amur tiger and leopard populations.

The two sides agreed to hold regular joint meetings, exchange observation data, cooperate in the fight against illegal hunting, and raise public awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation. There are also plans to establish special ecological corridors allowing tigers and leopards to move safely across the border.

After the meeting, participants visited the Natural Science Museum of the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, where they watched real-time footage of an Amur tiger crossing the border.
