China steps up measures to monitor wild Asian elephant populations
Local authorities have intensified efforts to ensure coexistence between humans and animals
In Jiangcheng County, in southwest China's Yunnan Province, home to a large population of wild Asian elephants, authorities have stepped up security measures to protect both elephants and humans. This is reported by CCTV+, a partner of TV BRICS.
In recent weeks, elephants have been coming out of the forest more often, which has caused concern. For example, three elephants were spotted in a cornfield and then on the road.
Local elephant monitors monitor the animals at a safe distance and warn residents of the approach of elephants by regulating traffic on the roads.
Experts explain that elephants usually gather at this time of the year in search of food, but this year the situation is different due to the delay in the rainy season. The current situation has made it difficult to track the elephants, which have split into smaller groups.
The authorities use ground personnel to ensure the safe coexistence of elephants and humans. Their goal is to find all the elephants before the villagers go to work in the fields to warn them of the potential danger.
