China uses genetic engineering to artificially breed sheep

Investment in genetic engineering has revitalised China's sheep breeding industry

Until 2015, sheep of the avang breed in Qamdo City were typically raised by nomadic grazing, relying on inbreeding and natural feeding. To restore the breed's viability, the city of Qamdo City has empowered enterprises to conduct scientific research and carefully select and breed high-quality varieties. This is reported by CCTV+, a partner of TV BRICS.

At the Embryonic Engineering Technology Centre in Qamdo City, researchers are carrying out embryo transplantation work for avang sheep. Through embryo culture, freezing, and embryo transplantation techniques, they are able to compensate for the natural limitation of single births, achieving rapid population expansion.

These sheep are characterised by their large size, fast growth, high meat production, and good profitability.

There are currently more than 300,000 sheep kept in Qamdo City.
