Egypt adds 2,000 MW of renewable energy to national grid

The North African country is now surpassing several advanced European states in renewable capacity

Egypt has successfully added 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy, comprising solar and wind power, to its national electricity grid. This is reported by Sada El-Balad, a partner of TV BRICS.

Egypt reduced its fuel consumption in June from an initially planned 142 million cubic metres of gas equivalent to approximately 127 million cubic metres. This shift saved around 12 per cent of fuel usage, according to a report from the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

In July, the Egyptian national grid recorded its highest-ever electricity demand, reaching 39,400 megawatts and marking a historic peak in consumption.

According to the report, the grid’s ability to accommodate these loads stems from a year-long urgent plan to improve operational efficiency, apply rigorous maintenance programmes aligned with global standards, and enhance performance.
