Ethiopia contributes to the establishment of the Nile River Basin Commission
The Cooperation Framework Agreement (CFA) for the Nile Basin countries, opened for signature in 2010, has been ratified by Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, and Burundi. This was a step towards promoting cooperation among the riparian states, as reports Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), a partner of TV BRICS.
Under the terms of the agreement, the countries must ratify it in their parliaments and submit it to the African Union to establish a joint commission that will provide a legal framework for the equitable utilisation of the waters of the Nile.
The establishment of the commission will contribute to the equitable utilisation of water resources and peacekeeping in the region.
Experts are confident that the establishment of the commission could establish a new era of shared development for the countries of the Nile Basin, with the emphasis on giving up exclusive control over shared water resources in favour of shared growth and prosperity for all riparian states.
