Green Programme in Ghudhwana pushes forward sustainable transformation in Saudi Arabia
The environmental rehabilitation of Ghudhwana in the Najd region, Riyadh Province, has been successfully completed, with over 15,000 trees and shrubs planted in the area, according to an announcement by the Green Riyadh Programme, as cited by the media Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The site is located in the Wadi Hanifa valley, in central Saudi Arabia, and spans over 5 kilometers. The rehabilitation aimed to create a natural haven, enriching the livelihoods of the surrounding communities by offering more recreational and entertainment spaces to citizens.
The project was conducted in alignment with the Kingdom's sustainable environmental practices, addressing environmental challenges such as waste collection and disposal, flood control, and extensive cleaning operations.
Spanning over 148 kilometres, the Green Riyadh Programme aims to implement afforestation methods adhering to the highest standards of urban design and sustainability. Local authorities plan to achieve this by creating parks, greening main roads and public squares, and introducing green areas in government buildings and educational institutions.
The programme's scope is ambitious, targeting the cultivation of 7.5 million trees in the city, raising the vegetation cover to 9 per cent. This will help lower temperatures and improve air quality.
